 The Resurrection of Louis Riel

born in the year 1844, a Metis – of mixed blood,
inherited from a French Canadian fur trader
and a Cree indigenous woman – at 13 sent to
a Montreal parish to study for the priesthood

at the age of 25 in 1869 he led the Metis
Red River Resistance against Ontario Scots
encroaching on Metis land and so the
river ran red

with the defeat of Riel and his hanging for
high treason, making him a mythic folk hero
of the Metis and French Canadians
and later recognised as Manitoba’s 1st premier

and now there is the emergence of a 2nd Metis
as Manitoba’s 25th premier, following in Riel’s
footsteps : Wab Kinew, leader of Manitoba’s
New Democratic Party

a former national broadcaster with a Choice
Music Award and four books published
to his credit so far
