If you’re looking for a relaxing way to spend time with mom this weekend, why not cast a line together? The Ontario government is offering free fishing across the province on Saturday, May 10 and Sunday, May 11 in celebration of Mother’s Day.

That means Canadian residents can enjoy the great outdoors and try recreational fishing without a licence for the entire weekend.

“Fishing is a timeless Ontario tradition that brings people together,” said Mike Harris, Minister of Natural Resources. “Whether you’re an experienced angler or casting a line for the first time, it’s a great way to connect with loved ones and enjoy everything the great outdoors has to offer.”

Why Free Fishing?

Fishing isn’t just fun—it also supports local jobs and tourism. Recreational fishing generates an estimated $1.75 billion annually in Ontario, making it a key contributor to many small-town economies.

Free fishing weekends are designed to encourage more people to discover the joy of the sport. This Mother’s Day weekend is the second of four free fishing events happening in 2025. The next opportunities will be on Father’s Day weekend (June 14–15) and during Family Fishing Week (June 28–July 6).

While you don’t need a licence this weekend, all regular fishing regulations still apply, including catch limits, size limits, and sanctuary rules. And don’t forget—participants must carry valid government-issued ID that includes their name and date of birth.

Veterans and active Canadian Armed Forces members who live in Ontario can fish for free all year round.

Where to Get a Licence Outside Free Weekends

If you catch the fishing bug and want to keep going, you can buy a licence at huntandfishontario.com or through ServiceOntario and authorized vendors. Just make sure you look for the official Ontario logo if buying online.

So grab your rods, pack a picnic, and make some memories—Mother Nature (and Mom) will thank you.
