Once the furnace is running steadily, indoor humidity falls away. Timber shrinks by a small but meaningful amount, and clearances appear that did not exist a few months earlier. A panel that sat tight against its joists through the summer now has perhaps half a millimetre of play in it. Put weight on that spot and two surfaces move against each other. Movement several inches away, or in the subfloor beneath the finish floor entirely, transfers to the nearest seam and comes out as sound there. Chase the sound and face-screw that plank into a joist, and you can silence one spot while creating two new ones a foot away, because you have changed how the panel flexes without addressing why it was flexing. Proper diagnosis means loading the floor in a grid rather than at the one noisy step, and working out whether the movement follows a joist line, a panel edge or a single board.
Repairing From Below
Where the underside is reachable, that is almost always the better approach. An unfinished basement or crawl space gives direct access to the joists and the back of the subfloor. Working from beneath, a technician can pack the void at the joist with adhesive-set shims, or pull the deck back down using fasteners driven upward that never reach the finish surface. Blocking can be added between joists where the movement is at a panel edge. Nothing above is disturbed, so nothing is visible afterward and the room is usable the same day.
Repairing From Above
With a finished ceiling below, the work comes through the finish surface, and the method depends on what that surface is. Through hardwood, fasteners are set below the surface and the holes filled to match. Engineered, laminate and vinyl each have limits on what can be fastened and where, because a wear layer cannot always be filled convincingly.
