The federal government has opened applications for a new $100 million funding program aimed at helping organizations create more opportunities for women in leadership, skilled trades, science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), and other high-growth industries across Canada.
The announcement was made Wednesday by Rechie Valdez, Minister of Women and Gender Equality and Secretary of State (Small Business and Tourism), who said increasing women’s participation in the workforce is essential to Canada’s long-term economic growth and competitiveness.
The Women’s Economic and Leadership Opportunities Fund 2026 will provide financial support to projects that remove barriers preventing women and girls from advancing in their careers, starting businesses, and entering industries where they remain underrepresented.
Funding Focuses on Leadership, STEM and Artificial Intelligence
According to the federal government, women continue to hold fewer senior leadership positions than men and remain underrepresented in sectors such as:
- Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)
- Skilled trades
- Artificial intelligence (AI)
- Other emerging, high-growth industries
The government says the funding will support projects that help women gain leadership experience, develop new skills, and prepare for careers in an economy increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence and technological innovation.
Organizations receiving funding may develop programs that encourage women to pursue careers in these fields, provide mentorship opportunities, or help eliminate systemic barriers that limit economic participation.
Applications Open Until September 15
Eligible organizations have until September 15, 2026, at 12 p.m. Pacific Time to submit proposals.
Further details, including eligibility requirements and application guidelines, are available through Women and Gender Equality Canada.
Building on Previous Investments
The new initiative builds on the federal government’s 2023 Women’s Economic and Leadership Opportunities Fund, which supported approximately 170 projects across Canada focused on improving women’s economic security and leadership opportunities.
The program is also part of the broader Women’s Program, through which Women and Gender Equality Canada has allocated $382.5 million over five years, along with $76.5 million annually beginning in 2026-27, to support organizations working to advance gender equality and address systemic barriers facing women.
Minister Says Economic Growth Depends on Women’s Participation
Minister Rechie Valdez said expanding opportunities for women strengthens both businesses and Canada’s economy.
“A stronger economy depends on making sure everyone has the opportunity to succeed. When more women can lead businesses and enter high-growth industries, Canada is stronger and more competitive.”
She added that the new investment will help organizations remove barriers, create opportunities, and ensure more women can contribute their skills, ideas, and leadership.
Why It Matters
As Canada continues investing in artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing, clean technology, and skilled trades, workforce shortages remain a significant challenge. Increasing participation by women in these sectors could help address labour demands while improving economic equality.
The federal government says supporting women’s leadership and employment in emerging industries is part of its broader strategy to build a stronger, more innovative Canadian economy.
