Ottawa, Canada – The African Canadian Senate Group (ACSG) has elected a new chair and vice chair for the next chapter of the group’s work. Senator Bernadette Clement now serves as Chair; Senator Wanda Thomas Bernard is the new Vice Chair.
Founded in 2020 by a small group of African Canadian senators, the ACSG has grown to an impressive nine senators. Along with the chair and deputy chair, members of the group include Senators Sharon Burey, Amina Gerba, Tony Ince, Rosemary Moodie, Mohamed Ravalia, Paulette Senior and Suze Youance. Together, they represent many provinces and senate groups; what binds the group together is a unique connection to the African continent.
“I’m grateful to Senator Moodie for her leadership and for welcoming me into the ACSG,” said Senator Clement. “Together, the ACSG will continue to uplift the voices, stories, and priorities of African Canadians.”
“Representation makes all the difference.” Senator Bernard said. “When I look around the group and see eight other incredible senators who look like me, it gives me critical hope for the work we can do together in the Senate.”
The group advocates for racial justice, employment equity, gender equality, education, prosperity, mental and overall health and other issues impacting the lives of Canadians of African Descent, that arise.
