Battle River-Crowfoot, AB – Damien Kurek, the Conservative MP for Battle River-Crowfoot has announced early Friday that he would step down from his seat to allow Pierre Poilievre to run for the seat in his riding.

Battle River-Crowfoot is one of the safest Conservative ridings in Canada, having just voted for Damien Kurek by a margin of nearly 50,000 votes. Poilievre took to social media Friday afternoon, calling Damien Kurek’s act “selfless,” and thanking him for the opportunity to run and presumably take office in this seat. Kurek has represented the riding since winning its election in 2019 with over 85% of the vote.

Prime Minister Mark Carney has already announced that in the wake of Kurek’s expected resignation, he will be quick to call a by-election, a move that has garnered respect from both sides of the aisle.

With this announcement, there is less doubt that Poilievre will continue to lead the Conservative Party for the foreseeable future, now with an expectation that any interim opposition leader in the house will only lead for a brief period before the by-election is held.
